Issue Decided?

Our Issue was Decided
We have finally decided our issue over a class debate. The issue that we will be discussing is the river pollution in Taihape. We had a very close debate as we were fighting over weather we should do the cinema, rubbish recycling or the river. We decided that the river would be the best option as if we were to do the cinema we would be caring more about our selfs than the enviroment. The reson we chose this subject is that we thought that it would be a good idea to clean up the river because in the next genaration the river will be polluted and our kids will not be able to swim in there ad also our kids, Kids will not be able to because it will be poluted from people just dumbing there rubish in the river.

You chose an excellent issue. I love swimming in rivers and it's awful to think that in the future people mightn't be able to do what we love doing. I'm looking forward to reading some more soon.

Hi Teri,
I live in Wellington and I also care a lot about the environment! You are doing a great job - keep it up!

Hi Teri,

I heard about your class project and it sounds both interesting and something that will make a difference to a part of the world. I'm from New Zealand (Wellington) but for the past three years my partner and I have been living in Great Britain - although we'll go back to live in New Zealand one day. At the moment we're living in a town called Leamington Spa (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=leamington+spa&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=6). It's pronounced Lemington, and is named after the River Leam (also pronounced Lem). This weekend we hired a peddle boat and cruised around the river for a while. It was a lot cleaner than a year ago when I last went on it on a boat, which was good. In fact, your blogs made me go and look for information about how clean the River Leam is and I found a River Leam Litter Pick that's on in two weeks' time (http://www.actionearth.org.uk/projects/week11.php). Unfortunately I'll be away on that day, so can't help out.

Your project reminded me of an idea that a friend on mine came up with called Small Group Action. (He's another New Zealander who lived here in Great Britain for a few years before going back to New Zealand.) He wrote a guide to Small Group Action and you can download and read it from http://www.apocalypse.gen.nz/sga/sgaguide.pdf. This is a summary of what a Small Group Action is:

"SMALL GROUP ACTION

"Small Group Action is about getting stuff done as opposed to just thinking about getting stuff done.

"The idea of Small Group Action is setting up ‘action groups’
which make stuff happen. Action groups have four key attributes:
* small (three to seven members)
* short-term (one to three months)
* concrete (focused on taking real action with a concrete result)
* consensual (first order of business is to find a common action to pursue)"

Your project sounds a bit like this because it's small (nine of you), short-term (I guess that it's for a school term?), concrete (you want to actually see a change in your river) and consensual (you all agreed on what to do). If you find any of the Small Group Action information interesting then I'm sure that my friend would like to hear about it. His blog is at http://www.additiverich.com/morgue/ so you could leave him a comment if you like - or even ask him questions!

Cheers, and best of luck,

Alastair
